Sepsis is a major cause of illness and death worldwide. It, and other infectious diseases, cause harm by disrupting the normal function of the endothelial cells lining the body's blood vessels. Andrea’s research focuses on specific proteins that mediate endothelial cell dysfunction and how the relative levels of these proteins change during various stages of infection. Ultimately, measuring one or a combination of these proteins in the blood of individuals with specific infections may help physicians to better predict clinical outcome.
